The Centre for Canadian Studies at the University of Vienna is thrilled to welcome Canadian Inuit Scottish artist Heather Carroll with her project “La Robe Rouge: Hitting the Road. Educate, Enable, Empower. The Path towards Healing” to Vienna during the UN campaign 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence.
La Robe Rouge is a travelling exhibition/installation that addresses domestic violence and more specifically speaks to the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG) issue in Canada and those indigenous children buried in unmarked graves, victims of the residential schools in Canada.
“For many years now I have been in dialogue with my First Nations friends in British Columbia concerning the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Children dilemma in Canada and have had many discussions with friends and family members concerning the effects of the residential schools on their survivors, their parents and the generations that followed.
In essence, the installation is about domestic violence and violence against women and children. The problem exists throughout every level of society regardless of economic status, from the desperately poor to the extreme rich. Despite the subject, I envisage the installation to be serene, soothing and exuding a powerful force. It is meant to promote healing and to send out a message of hope and empowerment.”
Heather Carroll’s La Robe Rouge will be on display in Hof 8.3 of Uni-Campus at the University of Vienna, outside of the Department of English and American Studies, on weekdays between December 1-5. All are welcome to attend a brief opening on Friday, Dec. 1, at 12:15, followed by an artist talk titled “Finding the Patterns: Indigenous Women of Canada,” to be held in Room 5 of the Department of English and American Studies. During the time of the installation, Heather will also offer beading workshops for students.
Feel free and join us for the lecture and/or to visit the installation by Heather Carroll.
The project is organized by the Centre for Canadian Studies at the University of Vienna in cooperation with the Embassy of Canada to Austria.
